CRITERIA

A rubric is a scoring tool for subjective assessments. It is a set of criteria and standards linked to learning objectives that is used to assess a student’s performance on papers, projects, essays, and other assignments. Rubrics allow for standardised evaluation according to specified criteria, making grading simpler and more transparent
literature review can be just a simple summary of the sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern and combines both summary and synthesis. A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, but a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information. It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant.

BLOG #9 The Introductory Paragraph

The introductory paragraph may be the most important part of your essay: it introduces the subject matter and eases your reader’s transition into the paper. A well-written introduction can make both the writing and the reading of the essay smoother and easier. The introduction for a research paper is the beginning section of the paper that contextualizes the research paper topic and articulates the paper’s thesis. Introductions for research papers  will vary depending on the type of research paper and the length requirements; however, all research paper introductions should contain information that allows the reader to fully understand the paper topic, the topic’s relevance, and the paper’s thesis before proceeding to more in-depth examination or exploration.

INTRODUCTION

History has seen many changes in the views of men, and one of these changes has been the status and roles of women. Only in the last hundred years have women been seen rightfully as equals to men. History, however, is not recent, and there are myriads of examples to how the female gender was given inferior status to males. Surprisingly, the evolutions of women’s rights were not particularly in chronological order. In different times and different societies, the status of females advanced or retrogressed depending on a variety of reasons.

paragraph 1:

Women’s movements have played a critical role in creating political space for female participation in politics around the world. In fact, there are more women in government today than ever before. But more needs to be done as women’s effectiveness in translaitng policies into action depends upon gender-responsive governance reforms. And the women’s movement can play a critical role in supporting such social change.

paragraph 2

Around the world women have a lower human and capital resource endowment than men: they often have fewer social networks linked to power than men, less education, less experience and less money. Networks and money are critical for effective political competition. In addition, women often lack the extended political apprenticeship that men have. This means that women may not have spent the time moving up the ranks in political parties that men have, and in consequence, they may lack the senior mentors, the support systems, and the built-up constituency base that men have.

paragraph 3

There are many social groups excluded from or marginalised from public decision-making. What is so striking about women as a general category is that it is so socially enormous – half the population. The structural exclusion of women is striking, and does tell us that there are serious double standards built into how democratic political competition works. What proves this is globalised tolerance of violence against women. If one in three men were subjected to violence, we would never accept that.

paragraph 4

It is often said that women don’t make the difference that we think they would do. The difficulty is that we have too few cases from which to judge as there are too few countries that have too recently attained levels of women in politics high enough for us to expect to see a tangible impact. Women constitute a critical mass of 30 percent of national parliaments in only 27 out of 192 countries.

paragraph 5

Similarly, in war crimes tribunals, women prosecutors make a difference – women prosecutors began insisting on indictments for war rape in the 1990s. Women make a difference to government: they offer women a role model, they feminise public space and make it more accessible to women and develop a constituency interested in gender equality.

paragraph 6

An accountable government is one that gets systems in place to encourage women to make input into making those decisions and that takes feedback from women. Truly accountable governments recognise constraints on women’s access to public decision-making and on their capacity to influence public priority setting because of gender discrimination and low human resource endowments.

paragraph 7

We need strong women’s movements everywhere. Around the world we have seen that we’ve lost ground where the women’s movement is not strong. Collective action has been the key to most gains made in women’s rights in the past century and remains the best means of amplifying women’s voice and leverage in public decision-making.

ARTICLE 2

The staggering changes for women that have come about over those seven generations in family life, in religion, in government, in employment, in education – these changes did not just happen spontaneously. Women themselves made these changes happen, very deliberately. Women have not been the passive recipients of miraculous changes in laws and human nature. Seven generations of women have come together to affect these changes in the most democratic ways: through meetings, petition drives, lobbying, public speaking, and nonviolent resistance. They have worked very deliberately to create a better world, and they have succeeded hugely.

paragraph 2

The Women’s Rights Movement marks July 13, 1848 as its beginning. On that sweltering summer day in upstate New York, a young housewife and mother, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was invited to tea with four women friends. When the course of their conversation turned to the situation of women, Stanton poured out her discontent with the limitations placed on her own situation under America’s new democracy. Hadn’t the American Revolution had been fought just 70 years earlier to win the patriots freedom from tyranny? But women had not gained freedom even though they’d taken equally tremendous risks through those dangerous years. Surely the new republic would benefit from having its women play more active roles throughout society. Stanton’s friends agreed with her, passionately. This was definitely not the first small group of women to have such a conversation, but it was the first to plan and carry out a specific, large-scale program.

paragraph 3

The women’s rights movement of the late 19th century went on to address the wide range of issues spelled out at the Seneca Falls Convention. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and women like Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and Sojourner Truth traveled the country lecturing and organizing for the next forty years. Eventually, winning the right to vote emerged as the central issue, since the vote would provide the means to achieve the other reforms. All told, the campaign for woman suffrage met such staunch opposition that it took 72 years for the women and their male supporters to be successful.

paragraph 4

As you might imagine, any 72-year campaign includes thousands of political strategists, capable organizers, administrators, activists and lobbyists. The story of diligent women’s rights activism is a litany of achievements against tremendous odds, of ingenious strategies and outrageous tactics used to outwit opponents and make the most of limited resources. It’s a dramatic tale, filled with remarkable women facing down incredible obstacles to win that most basic American civil right – the vote.

paragraph 5

The second wing of the post-suffrage movement was one that had not been explicitly anticipated in the Seneca Falls “Declaration of Sentiments.” It was the birth control movement, initiated by a public health nurse, Margaret Sanger, just as the suffrage drive was nearing its victory. The idea of woman’s right to control her own body, and especially to control her own reproduction and sexuality, added a visionary new dimension to the ideas of women’s emancipation. This movement not only endorsed educating women about existing birth control methods.

blog #8 CLOSE READING OF 2 JOURNAL ARTICLES

Married Women’s Property and Male Coercion: United States’ Courts and the Privy Examination, 1864-1887

Stacy Lorraine Braukman and Michael A. Ross

This is one of the most interesting review article based on the fact that women have evolved and know their rights.Any distinction, exclusion or restriction made on the basis of sex which has the effect or purpose of impairing or nullifying the recognition, enjoyment or exercise by women, irrespective of their marital status, on a basis of equality of men and women, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural, civil or any other field..

I do take consolation in one fact: since the home was women’s domain when advertising began to play an influential role in American culture, women were targeted as the ultimate consumers. Often mocked or stereotyped for shopping, women are constantly bombarded with pressure to “buy this” or “wear that” in order to improve their lives.

I would agree with the author, that staying at home to raise children can be a beautiful and fufilling choice. However, I would extend that to both sexes. That women feel more pressure to be the primary caregiver -regardless of whether or not that is their wish– is not good; Neither is it healthy that men feel added pressure to be the breadwinners, even if they’d rather be the stay-at-home parent.  That ad, however, did not empower men or their choices. It made them seem like a bunch of whiny misogynists who needed a car to validate their manhood.

The mortgage became a subject for litigation when Thomas Foster’s business venture failed and the couple defaulted. The lender attempted to foreclose on Mrs. Foster’s property. When she refused to relinquish her land, the lender sued. In her defense, Mrs. Foster claimed that the mortgage was not valid because her privy examination had been faulty.

In the United States, changes in married women’s property laws took place over a number of decades, but, during the twenty years after the Civil War, the pace quickened. The shift from a small-scale agricultural economy to one more modern, industrial, and urban drove many of these changes. During these years, for example, a majority of men and women in the workforce became wage laborers, a transformation with profound implications for the economics of marriage.

African Women: A Modern History

Publication Information: Book Title: African Women: A Modern History. Contributors: Catherine Coquery-Vidrovitch – author, Beth Gillian Raps – transltr. Publisher: Westview Press. Place of Publication: Boulder, CO. Publication Year: 1997. Page Number: viii.

chapter 1

To understand women’s place in ancient African societies, we must of course examine their place in the family as just defined. But the African continent, with its vast expanses and its multitude of historical-social-cultural or “ethnic” groups, spans a broad spectrum of types of familial communities.

The marriage pattern described earlier applied to free women, but some societies also captured women from other tribes or bought slaves for marriage.

From at least as early as the nineteenth century they had high mortality rates that threatened their survival and their productive ca-
pacity. The genealogies of the dominant lineages reveal that succession was often a problem because of a lack of survivors. Seeking slave women through force or purchase was considered worthwhile both to increase reproductive capacity (although it did not always do so) and, especiallyin matrilineal societies, to strengthen the father’s line.

Women’s situations varied by region and society. Whereas the central and eastern areas of Africa were particularly ravaged by the slave trade, in West Africa some women enjoyed a certain autonomy because, in addition to working the land, they produced handicrafts and sold goods in the market.

blog #6….. APA

BLOG # 6

APA is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. My major is in this category, Medicine. My work should be; typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″ margins on all sides. You should use 10-12 pt. Times New Roman font or a similar font.

A page header at the top of every page. To create a page header, insert page numbers flush right. Then type “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” in the header flush left.

There should be 4 sections,

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Main body
  • Reference

Title- your title be no more than 12 words in length and that it should not contain abbreviations or words that serve no purpose. Beneath the title, type the author’s name: first name, middle initial(s), and last name. Do not use titles (Dr.) or degrees (Ph.D.).

Abstract – Begin a new page. Your abstract page should already include the page header. On the first line of the abstract page, center the word “Abstract” (no bold, formatting, italics, underlining, or quotation marks).

Main body-  review on your topic. It should be flowing that is, stick to the main point of the topic.

Reference-  Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work. If you have more than one article by the same author, single-author references or multiple-author references with the exact same authors in the exact same order are listed in order by the year of publication, starting with the earliest.

blog 7 Evaluating Sources of Information

why is evaluating sources of information necessary?Becoming proficient at selecting sources will require experience, of course, but even a beginning researcher can take a few minutes to ask, “What source or what kind of source would be the most credible for providing information in this particular case?” Which sources are likely to be fair, objective, lacking hidden motives, showing quality control? It is important to keep these considerations in mind, so that you will not simply take the opinion of the first source or two you can locate. By thinking about these issues while searching, you will be able to identify suspicious or questionable sources more readily.

DOCUMENT: http://www.library.ucsb.edu/libinst/infolit/evaluate.html

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY:  includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following:SUMMARY,ACCESS,REFLECT.

REFERENCE:http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/01/

Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read each source more carefully.By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you’ll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you’ll then be able to develop your own point of view.

BLOG #4 2010 FEB 3 WOMEN RIGHTS RESEARCH PAPER

The women’s rights movement should therefore not surprise us that it’s occurring. What should surprise us is the mental slavery people (men and women) have to the status quo that they consider the old order as the ideal. They’re quick to defend tradition and  the old school with the most irrational forms of reasoning. They even glory in the days when women were completely subservient to men. They consider the super male chauvinist days as the “good old days.”Most feminist historians assert that all movements that work to overturn gender inequality and obtain women’s rights should be considered feminist movements, even when they did not (or do not) apply the term to themselves. As with many movements, women soon discovered that political change does not necessarily translate into a noticeable change in circumstances, and with economic recession they were the most vulnerable sector of the workforce. Some women who had held jobs prior to the war were obliged to give them up to returning soldiers, and many had been made redundant. We’re still facing such hypocrisy and blame games today were some are blaming societal problems on the increasing rights of women. Such people are casting stones on women over problems that are predominantly due to men not doing their share of responsibility. They strive to preserve the old order and resist change by using the most irrational and biased forms of reasoning. If only women worshiped men like in the  “good old days” these problems would end.Now that women are saying enough is enough we (as men) are throwing the sad social statistics at them and saying they are the cause of it. The system is broken because of women. Women need to change, not men. Women need to get back to the social disequilibrium of the “good old days.” This is the flawed thinking going on in the mind of an inconsiderate or merely misinformed and deceived person.

Some of the assumptions are that some countries are still on the run, trying to fight for woment rights. Women have not fully( COME OUT OF THE “CAVE”) to fight for their rights.A few people have heard an out cry and have no power to control the situation. Women are just sitting down and waiting for the right time. Should they? NO!!!! this is their right time for them to stand up and struggle fully till the end. Most countries still lack a legal definition of sexual harassment, and hence efficient mechanisms to combat it.Abortion remains another thorny issue for lawmakers. Selective abortion of female foetuses and female infanticide have resulted in a conspicuous gender imbalance.  Legal experts are unwilling to enforce these sorts of restrictions, believing women should have freedom of choice in childbearing.

{ ”Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed.  If I fail, no one will say, “She doesn’t have what it takes.”  They will say, “Women don’t have what it takes” Clare Boothe Luce …….1990 BORN A WOMAN page 50 paragraph 4}

“I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is:  I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute.  ~Rebecca West, “Mr Chesterton in Hysterics:1982.

         In this research, it will be an enlightment to the young generation. It will help them to see whats the reality in this world since they have been blinded by the male gender. They have to stand politically, socially and economically.  BOOKS: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn.Pub. Date: September 2009. {Half the Sky lays out an agenda for the world’s women and three major abuses: sex trafficking and forced prostitution; gender-based violence including honor killings and mass rape; maternal mortality, which needlessly claims one woman a minute. We know there are many worthy causes competing for attention in the world. We focus on this one because this kind of oppression feels transcendent – and so does the opportunity. Outsiders can truly make a difference.}

1/28 Week 2b – feb 01 blog 3

Genres of Research Writing-  This section will provide an overview for understanding the difference between an analytical and argumentative research paper. Research paper is an expanded essay that presents your own interpretation or evaluation or argument. When you write an essay, you use everything that you personally know and have thought about a subject. When you write a research paper you build upon what you know about the subject and make a deliberate attempt to find out what experts know. LINK: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/658/2/

     1. Women in the society-Women have fought for their rights politically and socially to  be accepted in the society. Example Wangari Wa Mathai from KENYA, Ann Nzingha of ANGOLA. The main question is……WHAT ARE THE FACTORS THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED  TO WOMEN  MOVEMENT RIGHTS TO VOTE? HOW HAS THIS MOVEMENT AFFECTED WOMEN POLICALLY,SOCIALLY,INDEPENDENTALLY FOR FUTURE GENERATION?Well, there have been some challeges that have been facing women from the past. examples….practise of Female genital mutilation in some cultures like Samburu in kenya. So the main question is, how have these challeges become a contributing factor to women?

   2. Urban PlanningUrban planning is a mixture of science and art. It encompasses many different disciplines and brings them all under a single umbrella. The simplest definition of urban planning is that it is the organization of all elements of a town or other urban environment. However, when one thinks about all the elements that make up a town, urban planning suddenly seems complicated – and it is.
